Hi guys,
I've got a 2001 cougar. Does anyone know a mechanic that is familiar with working on cougars in or around Brisbane? I.e one that knows where to get parts from and will actually order the right parts and not try to put an F150 alternator in it lol. At the moment the guy currently looking at it is under the impression that I need the front 2 catalytic converters replaced. The poor girl is stuck in limp mode. McNeddus |

Buying parts locally is a big problem, most of us these days get them from the USA which is where the cars were built.
I can recommend the following companies who will ship to Aust. remebering that in the US Cougars were sold as Mercury Cougars. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...0&model=COUGAR teamfordparts.com However some parts have to be sourced from the UK (fuel pumps for one) and I think alternators are another. The above companies are great for day to day parts and will deliver to you within seven days. So really the internet becomes your BFF as long as you own a Cougar.

Only thing I can say is.. do NOT take it to Ford. I had a misfire, changed my plugs and leads which didn't fix it. My laziness in not buying an ignition coil from rockauto parts(with shipping probably all of $120) resulted in a nice 1600 bill once they spent a week to work out the problem. I'm not capable of talking about it any further without flying into a Hulk like rage..

Can't help you with this one cos I am in Sydney however ask around as any half way capable mechanic should know what is going on with your Cougar. The only thing complex on a Cougar is the motor which relies heavily on the electronics and vacuum and any decent mechanic with a code reader should be able to asses what is going on and if there is a problem.
Everything else on a Cougar is just standard front wheel drive maintenance which on a car that is 14-15 years old can be significant which is why you need to get your parts from Rockauto because buying them locally is just ridiculous. Hope this helps.

I had similar problems with my sister's cougar. I spent a bunch of time replacing parts with little improvement but then as the car became worse i decide to pull of the intake manifold to clean the injectors and found more carbon buildup than i have ever seen on an intake.
I spent 2 days cleaning it and after i put it back together it has never run this good. The intake is easy to take off so i would give that a shot. I have pics but i can't seem to post them. Mark

Run an intake cleaner through the manifold every other service.

OK; I'll take the bait of this threads header. I know a few mechanics who would love to know a few Cougars.

It's funny the comments you get when you tell people "I drive a Cougar".

Worst part about doing any Google searching for Cougars for parts or information is the ads that you invariably get bombarded with by the search engine in forums etc. FMD!
Do people that search for the female variety get sent here?

Still better than having a Pajero (Spanish slang word meaning 'He who fiddles with himself for sexual gratification' from literal translation - "straw dealer").
And if as the op said "The poor girl is stuck in limp mode" perhaps we should have suggested Viagra.
