Hey Guys,
I have a mate who owns a 1997 Probe Manual in burgandy, Spoiler with genuine log booked klm at 68,000klm. His the 2nd owner who's owned it for about 7 years. Realy neat as you'd expect with such low klm. Could be the best you will find. He wants to sell it but I cant find any with anywhere near the low klm. What do you think its worth to sell? |

1997 Ford Probe SV (Jan) Valuation Prices * Private Price Guide $2,600 - $4,100 * Trade In Price Guide $800 - $2,300 * Average Km 140,000 - 260,000 So davway's on the money (roughly). And be wary of a car that's only done 5000km per year - it might be for a reason (ie in the shop more than on the road)

an average/beaten probe/mx6 goes for round the 2k mark, surely a mint low kay one is worth a little more?
trouble would be finding a buyer |

This car is worth way more than $2000!! It's not realistic. On carsales they are asking alot more than that for high klm versions. (getting it's another thing though I realise)
This car has never had a major problem. Only issue thats ever been is replaced boot gas struts and a flat battery replaced. He is lucky to drive it once a week as he owns a business and drives a work van every day. Always serviced regardless of klm. And spotless!! Just a matter of finding a buyer to love this one. I was thinking $8000-$10,000 as I've seen it and apreciate a good clean, Genuine low klm car that has'nt been thrashed. Maybe thats out of the ball park but we can always try. |

At the end of the day, its a car that no body really wants to buy. Condition aside, unless your into them, you wouldnt even look at them. The amount of people out there that would be interested in one, is minimal, then to find one that is willing to pay 3 times what its worth - isnt going to happen. Yes, they may be for sale else where for X amount - its just another owner dreaming his car is worth more than it really is. Its pretty obvious when it doesnt sell. BTW, the next quickest way to kill a car, outside of thrashing it, is to not use it. 68000km in 14 (almost 15) years can do just as much, if not more harm than driving it hard. I can guarantee it will need things replaced on it due to it not being used much. You may not think so, but it will. |

Thanks for that, Yes that was more what I was thinking to be reasonable as well. It may not be that desirable car but it's to good a car to give away and thats me saying it and I dont even own it!! A P Plater would love it im sure. |

Carsales is a good indication of what people are trying to flog a car for, not what they are worth or what someone will pay. There's cars on there that you'd never pay the asking price (they've been there for eons) and there's cars on there that are a real bargain (they're usually sold when you ring about them).
It's worth as much as somebody is prepared to pay for it and as much as you want to hold onto it until you get the price you want. The high end of the Redbook private scale is around right in my opinion (4100-4500). This is the amount (market value) most insurance agencies will insure it for unless you pay more for an agreed value. If you live in a remote rural area you can add 1-2k to the price. People will still pay that much more than it's value for some reason . See it all the time here.

Ours was insured & paid out at over $8k. The points made about selling are valid, depends on 'desperation' of buyer & seller.

For a market-based reality check, put it on eBay with a reserve and watch what it reaches. That gives you a baseline value of what the tight end of the makret is prepared to pay. Add (at this end of the market) 20% to the highest unsuccessful bid and put it on CarSales. You'll sell it.
However, if he or you love the car that much and attach that kind of value of it perhaps it is best off remaining with him. There isn't a lot of love in the market for this kind of car at the moment, even for an exceptional example.

Thanks for the info,
Yes this is a exceptional one. Will get him to start it high on carsales as nothing else compares klm wise and can always go down if needed. His in no hurry to sell at all. No matter what you advertise it for some tool always send stupid low ball offers. |

Am sure there will be someone who would still want to own a probe. Just put it on carsales and one day or other it will find its right owner. I have seen a lot of cars on carsales which were priced way less than they are worth and sometimes its otherway around. Sometimes people just cant find a good car that is in their budget and category, its quite common. I have seen people buying cars without roadworthy in desperation or badly in need of it. If you are not in rush, leave it on carsales and keep updating the ad, you will atleast get something close of what you expected.
cheers
