: Anyone who lives in Lonnie or read the local paper would know what I'm on about...
This happened during the police blitz Thursday morning, where they pulled over everyone travelling into the city for 'licence and rego' checks, which saw almost all commuters late by at least 45mins. Their actions on the West Tamar Highway created a blindspot just over a crest which meant as I came over the hill I met with the back of a Beemer (lovely old built-like-a-brick vintage). Even the cops said it was a stupid thing to be doing, so whoever their bosses are have got a lot of people to answer to! Last edited by TICK4D-TAS; 28-05-2007 at 02:26 PM. How did they create a blindspot? Could you see passed this blindspot before?

Other unecessery accident caused by some revenue gathering police blocking traffic to check rego,s. This is exactly what gives them a bad name.

Both the police and yourself have to take due care.
Claim through insurance. I bet 100% you will be held liable.

Running in the back of another car is not a cop's fault ... unless he rammed you from behind though.
But if you aren't paying close attention to the road conditions and the crest you are talking about ... then it's definitely not the Police's fault. I guess you are lucky for not getting a Neg Driving fine as well ... as running up the rear of another vehicle usually nets you one of these as well. I wish I could spend 45 minutes in traffic ... that would be heaven indeed. 1-2 hours is the norm up here. Then come across an accident ... and watch that time balloon out.

Actually I blame driving instructors who teach their students how to get a license rather than how to drive!!!

I think you guys have missed the point. If you come over the crest of a hill with a car at a stand still in a place that you would be able to see him till you were over the hill and had say 30 metres in which to stop I don't think that could be put down to driver in attention. Think development series accident at bathurst last year. ing_sm
Monkeys, what speed were you doing and what was the limit???

Bah..... Someone banged up his ride, and is lookin' to point the finger. So lets beat up on the Cops, 'cause they caused it???? Geez will some people ever grow up? If you rear end ANYONE it's your fault. Even if it's not. The fact is you should allow for incidents such as this in your driving technique. The guy didn't.

Wow everyone is quick to jump on him arn't they, you guys been on that road at all?
Im not saying that its not completely his fault, but lonnie, and tassie in general is very mountainous, so there is every chance that you will not see a stationary car on a freeway over a crest! Would never happen in Vic etc because its as flat as a tack. No one else really knows the circumstances, so chill out a bit. Why would they do that on the major highway?

Situation: doing 40 in a 70 zone, had just avoided one car braking a turning suddenly into another street and then another coming halfway out directly in front of me from a driveway. Yes, you can see past the blidspot that was created when the road isn’t like it was. It is estimated half the working population of Launceston and surrounds was late by more than 30 mins because of the ‘random’ checks. |

Jeez some of you guys are harsh. Lets look at some of the facts here. He states that it is a highway so I'd assume it's a 70 - 100 zone, he states there is a crest that causes a blind spot and then he also states that the police were holding up the traffic for one of their "blitzes". Now in normal traffic this would not have happened because there would not have been a car stopped in an 70 -100 zone just over the crest of a hill. I don't care who you are or how much attention you were paying there is no way anyone would have been able to stop in that situation, remember how mountainous Tassie is. Jeez give the poor guy a break. As for the Police causing the accident, they didn't directly but their action of holding up traffic certainly contributed to it.

This inspection did upset a lot of people, most people say allow 10 to 15 mins (one of Tassies many attractions, takes me 7 minutes to go from home to work) to get work, there were delays of up to 45 mins, so a lot of people were late for work. There were also people that missed their flights because they got stuck in the inspection jam.
However, while I would also be p****d off big time if that happened to my car, the cops did find a lot of unregistered cars and unlicensed drivers. Now these people flaunt the law, and while they think its ok, what happens if one of these unregisted / uninsured vehicles run into your pride and joy, you dont get a brass razoo. Sometimes, these things are a necessary evil, however by the sounds of it, it was poorly organised, not enough cops there checking, thus causing huge delays in the traffic, causing the situation where Monkey rear ended someone. This stretch of road is dual lane divided highway posted at 70 km/h, and not many people spped there these days as it is a very popular place for speed cameras I do feel for you tho mate, just goes to prove it only takes a second for your pride and joy to look very sad

I didn't mean to be harsh. The thread title is one of a long list of titles that get my back up. Cops this, Cops that.... And usually they are about blame setting rather than accepting reality. Appologies to Monkeys, and I have never visited Tassie. Though I do know of it's notorious terrain. I might add, I'm no saint, and have my share of run ins with the law. But I wear it, not beat up over my hardship. There are a few Cops on here, and I feel for them each time I read one of these threads.

Just a brief explanation on why we have closed this thread. Simply put it wasn’t heading in the direction the author or club would have liked.
While the thread title (subsequently changed) might have suggested directional blame, we believe the context of the subject was just and understood by the subjects intended recipients, that being club members. We would ask that people be mindful that within club forums there are specifics that might not be fully appreciated by the greater, general population. That’s the reason why club specific forums exist. When participating in such discussion please be mindful and respectful regarding subject matter that might not be as cut and dry as first thought. Some readers have correctly identified the situation as not normal. The author clearly stated a reference point in the local media regarding the situation and the negative fall out it created. The author also stated the police response. Neither are fabrications and they should have served as indicators that all isn’t as it seems. Thankyou to the people who showed such consideration.
