Default Is this true? AJAX in carby?

Old mate of mine told me about a trick he would use on his old Clevo. I think he is having a lend of me, but if anyone else has heard of this let me know.

Apparently a quick and easy way of cleaning out the carby and valves and to help re-seat the rings is to follow this.

Warm up engine

Remove airfilter

Sprinkle in to carby a couple of handfulls of AJAX cleaning powder!

Now am i being sucked in or is this and "old trick"

It does sound like it may help, but............. :monkes:

I've heard of this before aswell. Apparenty it helps to deglaze the bores and improve compression. Also heard auto trans fluid does the same thing.

Yes its an old trick for bedding in rings and deglazing bores ! Doesnt hurt the motor at all ! One of my mates had his big block sh1trolet rebuilt by a reputible mechanic and it did nothing but smoke and use heaps of oil, even after well and truely run in ! The mechanic gave up in the end and refused to do any more unless he started seeing more money ! We ended up doing this trick 3 times over a couple of weeks and after the third time it ran perfectly , and is still running strong today . if you just want to clean the carbon deposits of your valves and pistons , while the engine is running misting some water into the intake with a squirt bottle now and then will help.

Havent heard the Auto tranz fluid thing but !

Sounds to me like your friends mechanic proabaly did not replace the "ERG/PCV" (positive crankcase ventalation) valve. Usually attached to the manifold, its just a one way check valve, I reckon your mates mechanic just got lucky and the valve came unstuck.

Well, its a bit mixed as to opinions. From what i have heard now, i am maybe thinking of trying out. But still unsure. The 302 clevo does need a good cleran and so does the Holley 650 vac sec but..................

i have used a mix of ajax and water to deglaze an xf worked just dont go overbored bring the revs up and just tip a little in at a time.

One year at bathurst, a motor was run in over night by using ajax to bed the rings in.... Brock was the culprit, but i may be wrong...

yes its true.

And on that for crazy things, noisy diff, or stiff manual gearbox???

Splash of AUTO oil in them will fix that right up....

I think you are correct. I know it was a 350-powered Monaro and Brock raced a HT didn't he? I also heard this one on a "History Channel" story on the '55 Chev. Supposedly early SBCs used oil so the dealer "fix" was Ajax down the carb. Too bad you can't pour Ajax down the guts of an injected engine .. I bet a few LS1 could do with a good deglazing!!

I've used the water mist to clean combustion chambers on old cars. I heard brake fluid works and Diesel on UL cars.

I believe the correct way is to mix Ajax and petrol to a runny watery paste, and pour it down the carby. It is more commonly referred to as "hone in a can"

Another way to stop an engine smoking, is to run about 1-2 litres of ATF in a full tank, and when its just about gone, run a few cups of glass cleaner through the carb, works a treat.....

Just like oven cleaner is brilliant for removing stickers/pin stripes....

I tried using brake fluid on my KB Laser, it didn't stop it blowing smoke, but it did seem to run a bit better afterwards... I'd never try it on the EA though.

As for AJAX, I reckon I'll try it on my brothers Datsun 120Y :

The other good trick i use is cross leads 2 and 3 on ANY motor to clean out the carby.....

Works a treat...

Yes I did.
There is no way ajax or any other kind of oil treatment/injector treatment could possibly have an affect on the valve i refer to. It is usually attached to the inlet manifold and has a breather tube to the crankcase to allow the crankcase to breath. even if the valve was stuck cleaners could not touch it.
And its about an $8.00 part that is easily missed.

Well I will explain it in a way that maybe you can understand ! The mechanic honed the bores with too fine a stone and was to smooth to bed the rings in properly! It had nothing to do with the pcv and I dont know how you came about the idea i thought ajax made its way to the pcv ! did you understand that or do I need to explain more !

Causes backfire out of the carbie to dislodge soemthing blocked in there. As there is a spark in the chamber whilst the air valve is open, it detonates and bam! out of the intake

Then cross the leads back to original.

makes a big difference in performance.


DONT do it on an EFI car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reminds me of an article in the Australian Dirt Bike mag they said you could add V8vege juice into he fuel mix to align molecules +more scientific mumbo, and would clean out the carbie and boost octane...
Nobody knowticed it was the april edition
