Default driving from Geelong to Brisbane on gas

Just wondering how plentiful gas is on the newel? It's an el wagon 4.0 auto so doesn't have a huge tank but does have petrol aswell, although I wan't to keep costs low and use gas all the way. No trailer or heavy weight so I should get 11k per litre on gas I think?

you should have no problems on the newel for lpg. pretty much all the main towns will have atleast one outlet.

its only when you get off the highway to the outlying towns that you can get caught short

I did Brisbane to Melbourne in an XA 351 back in April. To give you an idea it cost me about $450 in 98 octane. I would advise to keep at least a half a tank of petrol as a backup but you should be right there were heaps of BPs along the Newell in places like Moree, Cooabarabran Parkes etc which would all have gas. I did find the 98 octane hard to get between Beadesert and Goondiwindi. Warwick would probably be your best bet for a fuel stop on that leg of the trip. Hope this helps

At Dubbo now, average of 8km per litre, gas is pretty dear once you leave Shepparton though

http://apps.nowwhere.com.au/LPGA/Planner/default.aspx Use this but United isn't on it. So use this http://www.unitedpetroleum.com.au/index.asp. for United you have to find a town you may be going through and click on the servo to see if it has gas but lots do. You must have some idea on how far you can go on a tank. Gas is dear almost everywhere in NSW compared to VIC. How much were you paying there and how much on your trip now? How far is your tank getting you? Details boy, we need details.

Shell have a trip planner on their site that you can use to see where gas is available.

i drove from melb to perth on lpg, getting 300 to a tank i think there was only 1 time maybe 2 i had to hit petrol to get to the next servo, unless your back tracking it you should be able to get round nearly every sealed rd in aus with LPG in a decent car

G'day everyone, I'm new to this forum but I thought I'd offer my two cents on this thread, since I've done a couple of trips up and down the Newell in the past year. I've got a DF LTD on gas, and I've found that getting LPG between Brisbane and Melbourne is not generally a problem, but like others have pointed out, it does vary in price as you head up and down the Newell. My car's got the six in it, with an 80 litre LPG tank (68 litres useable), and I generally find I can rely on 400kms a tank although I've regularly seen 500km before it runs out. I found LPG to be cheapest in and around Melbourne. In fact, I remember thinking how fantastic it must be to have a gas fuelled car in Melbourne. I found gas to be around the mid-50s at the time when I was in Melbourne. By comparison, it was about 84 or 85 cents in Forbes, which was about the highest I remember encountering. Here in Brisbane at the moment, gas is running at around 64cents a litres. Getting the LPG fitted to my car was among the best things I've ever done. I got it fitted just before the rebate was reduced so I got $1750 back on the $2350 installation cost which meant it only cost me $600. I took the girlfriend to Tasmania about a week after I had it fitted and I saved about $600 on fuel costs alone, so that trip alone was enough to "pay" for the gas installation, if you see where I'm coming from
Cheers
Steve

LOL.....Maybe they've put it UP since I went through . But I think we get the general idea that it gets dearer as you travel further inland. It's still cheaper than unleaded ;-p

Hi all
I did the same trip a few years back but in reverse
not reverse gear but from Brisbane to melbourne and back
we had an NC Fairlane 5 litre on straight gas
went down to Melbourne and back not a problem
I just filled up at around the 300k to 400k mark
just to be on the safe side
now I have an AU Fairmont with Tickford dual fuel
so a trip south is no probs
we can go 1000ks without refueling if we wanted to
Ive heard a sisi Comondoor will do this not
in the ads yes but in real life trip no
anyway gas is the way to go
thanks John

Post Re: driving from Geelong to Brisbane on gas

I agree with you, lastfairlane.....gas sure is the only way to go :-). I remember the first time filling up with gas and looking at the bowser thinking holy smokes it has been that cheap to fill up my car for a LONG TIME, lol :-). I had a little KF Laser for a run around car for a while, and having the LTD on gas has taken my running costs back to that level i.e. I think the LTD is now only costing about the same to run as the little Laser did. I guess none of this will be news to those who already have gas on their vehicles but I still get a smile when I see how much it's saving me at the pump :-).
