Question XA GS Dash into falcon 500

I'm trying to fit a GS dash (240kph, 7k taco, with volts, oil pres, fuel & temp up top) & nothing's working. I tee'd into the loom & set the fuel guage on fire when I turned the car on. Has anyone got a schematic or any ideas? Nothing's working.

I can post up a mud map if it'll help you. Unfortunately, yes smoke means its probably stuffed. I might assume you patched the fuel guage into the 12V loom? Easy mistake to make - three of the top four little guages run off their own power supply contained within the primary cluster, and is of about 5V from memory. Only the Volt meter is patched into the regular loom.
I made all mine up myself, so may be able to help you out; but first things first, get ALL of your guages checked out and repaired by an instrumentation specialist. Mine were all bone dry and some had to be re-coiled (that is, the internal windings not dissimillar to an electric motor I suppose). You may be up for a couple hundred bucks to get them all schmick and calibrated; but then you need to be SURE it's wired correctly, and test it all first, else you'll be up for another couple hundred bucks in a blink of an eye (and a puff of smoke).

I have various full wiring diagrams which you can use to select for example the 500 and GS and take what you need from each; alternatively I have a mudmap here somewhere I'll attach if you or anyone would like me to...???

Also I reckon I saw a link to wiring diagrams somewhere in these forums - not sure how that compares to my 'library', I'm off to check that out now...

Big Mike,

I'd be good if you post a mud map for me. I've fortunately got a couple of spare guages I can plunder from other clusters I've got. My stupid Gregories Shop Manual has everthing but a legend to the numbering of the wiring diagram.

Thanks.

Default Clear as mud...

Sorry it took me so long to get this happening.
I reckon this is very self explanetry, I've drawn all the correct wire colours and a bit of detail on the 'other' side of the main harness connector. I can't for the life of me find the mudmap I put together when I put my dash in; I just worked off the "SP MANUAL - by MURRAY BOOKS" which I'd be happy to scan up for the AFF team subject to copyright issues etc.

Hope this helps, if not let us know and someone on here will talk you through it more. I'm still trying to uncover paperwork - I had the resistance of the guage inputs here somewhere. I'm sure the back of my guages was all labelled too; so you can clearly see the 5V inputs and outputs as differentiated from the 12V power and standard sensor input.

Awesome mud-map, chief! Got one for an XC GXL dash??

XA 383... I'm sorry to say mate, but you've probably violated the First Rule of Auto Electrics (tm).

Rule 1: Everything runs on smoke. If you see smoke coming from the back of an electrical device, chances are that you've let the smoke out, and whatever it was will cease to function until you can put the smoke back in.

Um can't say that I do, book of refference covers XA/B ZF/G V8 models - its like a 30 year old hard-cover Gregory's. However, the theorem should follow; getting the smoke back in is damn near impossible; but short of letting it out I'd imagine the guages probably follow the same wiring though different connectors and colours are likely. If you're changing one dash to another as did I, I would suggest writing down or marking the different wires colours and respective uses - then if you're missing something (like the tacho in my case) it was easy enough to track the white/green trace wire from the coil into the main loom connector - after establishing it wasn't in the dash connector and another connector had to be located... fun and games - and the angles our arms and necks need to bend...

I mean for instance if you're trying to change ZH to XC GXL, I'm pretty sure your Fairlane would have all the guages a GXL dash has except the tacho??? And a quick impedance check (or smoke test) will confirm if the Fairlane fuel guage and the GXL fuel guage are the same internally, etc. etc. for each guage??? Another to be aware of though, I'm not sure if the ZH had a oil guage or just a light - if its a light obviously you have to replace the oil pressure switch with a sender unit; or again you'll let that blasted smoke out of the whole dash.

Oh and thanks - if someone needs a coloured mud map translated from a proper wiring diagram - XC GXL or otherwise, I could give it a go.

Mate, if you'd only posted this a while back... I already let the smoke out of one of the bastards

As long as it was only one? An instrument guy can re-coil it. Might be up for a quid if you let the smoke out of the three 5V guages at once though.
