Default Keep it, or get rid of it

Ok, i need a bit of help deciding whether to keep my car or sell it for as much as i can and either get something else, or stick to the old cars.

The car has got 260,000k's on it, and in the last month ive replaced the MAF sensor, Alternator, Battery and now the power steering has just died on me. I love driving the thing, but at the rate im going im not going to be able to afford to keep paying for repairs and drive it at the same time.

So do i whack a 2nd hand pump on it, and try and flog it off and go back to my old cars. Or do i keep putting up with it? and just hope that nothing else goes wrong with it?

Another thing to consider is that i still have a $8,500 loan that needs to be paid off. So ill need ATLEAST that much for it.

i guess as my old man once said to me, eventually everything that needs to be replaced will have been replaced, something to keep in ind, plus, with 260k on the clock you may not get exactly what you want for it.

Persevere, it will be worth it on the long run. :eclipsee_

Hey there klawsterfobik, Its steve (was there lastnight when your power steering let go)

Its really a personal choice, Your old cars are going to break down as well dont forget (they just are a bit cheaper to fix! .

Genesis is right. You will be punished for the amount of kays it has on the clock when you go to sell it. Unless, the buyer can see past that and see's the car for the awesome ride it is.

By the way, i dont really agree with the comment about once everything is replaced, it replaced. This is an Eseries we are talking about here!! eheh

The brutal truth is that it is only going to get older, but you have to make a choice by looking at the money you owe on it, to how much your going to get for it, and decide if you are willing to keep replacing the parts on it or not.

My opinion is keep it!, but like I said, your the one that has to way up the pro's and cons.

i was in the same boat the other week, my power steering system was going to cost me about $400, I was approved for a car loan and got myself an EL Fairmont for $9000 - $1000 for the ea. I loved the ea but it was seeming like every month i was spending more and more on it. The only thing i would suggest if u get rid of the car is not to have 5 months of reg left on it.

ps i spent money on all of those thing plus more.

I'll keep it as the bit that have been wearing out are only small & easy to replace plus that just normal wear & tear.

The main thing you need to ask yourself is,
Does it make you happy? How many smiles does it give you? Each smile is worth a thousand dollars in my book. People say that about my V8 and petrol, but I answer with a smile....

Wack a 2nd hand pump on it and keep it. If you get something else, you may be getting something similar all over.

Better the devil you know!

With so many of them off the road now parts should not be an issue?
Putting 2nd hand parts on every now and again will be cheaper than wearing the depreciation of a newer car.

Depends, what sorta car is it? I'm in a simmilar situation. I've spent far too much on my EF. (I stopped counting at about 12k and have spent a couple since then). I'm now at the point where I'm thinkin about miving onto something else. I'm probably going to go for a au. Mainly because I want to buy something newer, less problems.

thanks guys, car is a series II DF LTD, and i reckon i am going to keep it. I really do love driving it, and from what ive been told i think the power steering pump failing may have been through my own stupidity.

I think ive decided im going to keep it...

If you love driving it etc still and the problems arent too bad then the car, then good decision. No point selling up and buying another car which may (or may not) have more problems...
