The point about Cosworth is not their rally history, its that they are the winningest engine builder *ever*.
And most of those wins were with Cosworth motors with FORD on the cam covers.
No other engine has been competitive in F1 for 20 years straight (Ford Cosworth DFV), dominating it for a good 10 years of that period.

True True, THats what I forgot to mention, that it wasn't just rally, but F1 and the american champ/Indy cars used cossie engines as well I beleve...

Not really silly wings, more "ugly" than silly.

Certainly falls into the silly lights and dreamer exhaust catagories though! :hihi:

I agree with you actually. I would describe myself as an Aussie Ford fan as I have no real interest in "Euro Fords" at all. I can appreciate them for what they are and for what they have achieved, but I prefer the Aussie Fords every time, as well as the largely Aussie Ford racing category - V8 SC. As for FPV having no history, everyone has to start somewhere....

This is a silly wing thread and yes they had a 'silly' wing .........yes it did things nessesary to the car but it looked silly!!!!!
Yep, agree 100%. Just because it was created like that from factory and has an element of functionality doesnt mean it doesnt look silly.

Sure the Cosworth is fast and a loverly car... and the AU may look "silly" but the AU isnt "cute"(this is how I have heard the Sierra defined by a number of women), its got its manhood still intact.
Give me the AU any day over a small Euro Ford - regardless of outright perfomance or history. I think what Casper is saying is that he likes a car with balls. And I have to agree. Ballsy cars (ie FPVs and AUs) might not perform any better than Cosworths, but they have a tougher nature about them. Its just a vibe thing.

As for that blue Excel, that is one of the mos disgusting things I have seen. The Playboy Bunny completes the picture really....

But each to their own, it is their car, they con do what they like to it... blah blah blah (standard disclaimer).

How does a AU/FPV look more "ballsy" than an Escort Cosworth ?
(not trying to stir here, just wondering how you determine the ballsy-ness of a car)

I do wonder how many people have seen a Escort Cosworth in the flesh.

I've heard an RS500 a full song (DJR's black personal one to be exact back in the day he raced them) and I've heard a T3 at full song. No comparison. Its nothing to do with looks alone (although the T3 is FAR FAR FAR more aggressive looking that a 4 pot turbo of any kind through sheer presence on the road) but to do with that sound. Picture a 5.6L V8 going through narrow Engilsh streets at full song, the RS500 would not even be heard to start with.

I personally have a very soft spot for the RS500, would love to own one as I an a Cosworth fan and old enough to remember the late 80's era where they were invincible.. but I'll take a T3 over a RS500 any day of the week, it is a living, breathing animal of true Australian design. Something I was brought up to value over any euro pup.

Fair question mate

I didnt say they looked more ballsy, I said I think they are more ballsy.

But MY reasons for saying that would be that they (Falcons/FPVs) are bigger, they are not small, chic car-like style, I would presume that a V8 or even a good Ford 6 would SOUND like it has grunt, they are (in my opinion) more aggressive looking...

I guess it is an Aussie culture thing, but over here, smallish cars are not ballsy, regardless of awesome performance and history and if anything they tend to be more on the ricey side of things (not saying the Cosworth is ricey though).

Put a GT next to a Sierra and let them both idle... I would say that MOST Aussies would think that the GT has the more balls of the two, regardless of their respective performances.

Its just the character of the cars I guess.

It must be an Aussie thing.... and fair enough too, as your bound to have a soft spot for your locally made product.

For me though as an independant critic with no bias either way, I personally think the Escort/Sierra Cosworths are far tougher looking vehicles than anything Ford AU have produced.

Thats not to say they havent produced some great looking cars either, T3 is awesome (even with its ugly behind : ) and the Typhoon (MKII) is imo the best looking Aussie Ford ever, tough yet subtle :sm_drool:

not sure how many T3's are in Auckland but they sound like nothing else.. there is simply no turbo 4 pot on earth that will come close to matching it for road presence.

I do know the history of the cosworth, yet never bothered to look up on it or see any pictures. I did see the escort badge, but I didn't know if that was a Cosworth.

This thread was not meant to bash the cosworth. The are plenty of ugly cars out there that go very well. This thread was merly to point out the ones that look like a sore thumb.

I do agree that the cosworth wing does play a part in the aero dynmics of the car.... but at what speed? 400kph? It just seems a bit oversized for todays standards when you compare it to the F1's and V8 Supercars and the like....

All the same... some of you guys have pointed out some real... well... paculiar tastes in design... yeah... that sounds soft....

Bit O/T & Not cossie bashing ....
A mate of mine was the driver of Dick Johnsons 3rd Sierra at Bathurst when he ran the 3 cars , Terry had been racing for years and had an RX7 exactly the same as Moffits at one stage, he ran Mini's & RX3's as well , also had driven GTHO's .. BUT he said the Sierra was the "biggest neck-snapping cars he's ever driven" and that the power was incredible and it was one of the biggest highlights of his racing career .

As for "silly wings" , in the mid '80's there was a Red XW Ute Running around Toongabbie/Seven Hills area & the wing was 1/3 the size of the Ute Tray (Looked like a pop-riveted flat iron speedway spoiler) was absolutely a POS , But like what has been said "Everyone to his own" The guy thought it looked fantastic : ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Happy to say I never took a photo of it .

i think if the rest of the car matches the wing
then it would look alrite

ie FRA's focus
it has the big huge wing on it..
but other than that is virtually stock
but once he puts the rest of his kit on it will all tie in together
as the wing IS fully functional
and is designed to actually work not just hang on like a piece of bubblegum

the funniest things ive seen is the stock cars with GT wings
not even a set of wheels on it

a VB commodore with an mitsubishi evo wing on it

that blue excel above i see it daily
and i also work not far from where that pic was taken (i work at supercheap just up from there)

i think the megane hatch is the ugliest car ever!

I must admit when I first saw the Esky Cossies I didn't like the look but things change with time! A guy I used to live near had an Esky and an RS-500 Cossie, looked good sitting next to each other!
