Mate well done, and thats very poor work from the origional person that looked at it.

And for some advise, from a qualifyed electrician, and as you have it working, and know what the problem was, spend a bit more time and redo your repair, loose the tape and redo your connections with some solder and heat shrink, or completly replace the wires. Do it once and do it correctly.

Also some mickey and mini pest control could be a good future invertment.

Again well done

thanks mate, chuffed as all get out.......I will take your advice and do a bit of soldering

in the techies defence it wasn't easy to find.....I had the headlight on and the wire was tucked behind a heap of other gear.....I probably dug a bit more deeper than he did with the knowledge of nothing to lose

I intend to remove a couple of sheets of iron from the roof and see where the little buggers go to it

Awesome to see that you go it all sorted on your own.
And saved a hell of a lot of $$$$ in the process as well.

I repair, build and maintain a lot of my machinery and equipment here and am well known in the district for my ability to repair and maintain other peoples machinery as well

I'm not flash on electronics.....thats a field left to the experts.....but if it's mechanical then I don't have a problem

I dont understand the willingness of some people to derive some form of pleasure from degrading another person on forums with absolutely no reason

it is not done out in the real world so why bring it in here?

Tech may have thought old machine + failed + some excuse + I bet this guy won't have a crack = remove/replace job which will earn him a lot more than trying to repair it. Wrong in many aspects but many tradies try to pull this trick. As for the mice issue, you may want to check the indoor unit by removing the front facia (should just be clips and screws) since mice can set up shop around the evaporator coil inside the actual head unit (they search for warmth). Seen it many times, also discovered a fried one across the internal printed circuit board which obviously killed the unit. They get in either via the roof or up the pipework/wires which are connected to the outdoor unit. Expanda foam works wonders or even some sort of sillicone to block up any openings. Amazing how mice can get in the tiniest of gaps so if you do plan to seal them up do it very well

thanks fellas.......I had the entire front of the unit in pieces, probably wouldn't have gone as far as i did if it wasn't for encouragement from here and the thought of nothing ventured nothing gained

I couldn't see where the little bugger got in but I will take a sheet of iron off the roof and have a good look around on the weekend

once again thanks for the encouragement and the words of support

Awesome result. I love these stories. It's like cheating the "throw away" system.

Thoroughly recommend the heat-shrink idea. You can use a heat gun to shrink it, or if you are careful a small gas torch. Electrical wholesalers and even Jaycar have it.

So your issue was in the indoor unit, I assumed it was in the outdoor unit. I would also check the outdoor unit (pretty easy to remove covers) seeing as you might be in the fix it mood - hopefully there are no nasty surprises. I'm sure you know to isolate any power to unit while you get in there and have a look

yes mate, inside head unit....the outdoor unit was "mouse proofed" about 4 years ago by a refrigeration mechanic who used to service the whole unit once a year

he and his wife split up and he no longer runs the business, worse luck

the isolation switch is right beside the outdoor unit, I also shut the fuse off....our whole house has just been upgraded to the latest earth leakage protection circuits as well

had it done when I put the solar on ......but I might just have a squizz "in case"

not hard to do, it's only four screws

wife reports the unit is working as good as new.......she's happy....so the world is at ease.....no nagging .....yet!!!!

I've still got a heap of work to do before I call it a night.....thats the joy of running your own business I guess.....cant complain to the boss

Glad it worked out in well for you in the end.

I was facing a similar problem with a similar vintage unit last summer.

It was the exact same story as Jastel's:

Luckily one of those 1 or 3 or 5 amp fuses (tubular shape, like the old car ones) got it back up and running. Otherwise it would have meant a whole new unit.

Interestingly/strangely, the advice given to me by the electrician was to put moth balls into the head unit to deter the geckos/critters.

I think he was referring to the 30yr old Evap cooler you have in the shed?

ie, it's the Falcon 500 of A/C units - it ain't real pretty or refined, but yet it's proved more reliable than the newer house A/C.

edit - read it again, and I dunno now....... guess it could have been a personal dig?
In any case, I'm jealous of the A/C in the shed........ I can only dream of such luxuries.

and +1 for the 5 minute fix... they're the best sort.
Reminds me of the time I increased the power of my EL wags, by 25% in 10 mins... (silicone on the MAF hotwire. )

ah! the big old swampy in the shed, mate it's a horse........came off a bread factories roof

she stands about 8 feet high and probably 4 feet wide......no ducts (Occ health and safety had kittens when they seen it

but because I work alone with no-one allowed in the shed, because of insurance involving large machines, they passed it

the old girl just pokes her big nose through an inlet cut into the wall of the shed.....I can put my hand in and touch the drum fan

the big bugger turns so slow that it just flicks the hand out of the way....but she nearly blows you down if you stand in front of her at half throttle

brings the shed temp down by around 10 - 20 degrees on a 35+ day

I have nothing in the shed to warm the place up yet, may have to look into a wood burner......gets a bit chilly out there at times

as for the dig well I'm over it......busy time of year, I don't finish sometimes until around 2 in the mornings and start my deliveries at about 7am so it's a long day, I had a particularly bad day so I may have been a bit short

normally wouldn't bother me

ah! so mr inductor is his name.....I just figured that he didn't look to be harmed....just lost his soft cover.....I put a bit of electrical tape over him just to preserve his modesty

I have yet to pull it to pieces again to solder and heat shrink the joints but I will on the weekend...as long as the outlaws leave me alone

I'm more used to working on 2 ton 100 year old equipment than this new fangled computer controlled stuff

It is the thermostat PCB by the looks .. Printed Circuit Board.
Probably made by Leasam controls .
what does you wall thermostat look like ? Photo if possible. I owned a wholesale outlet in Sydney and sold all air conditioning equipment. I might be able to help if you cannot repair it.
Have a look at this site : they will have a retrofit replacement that will require a re-wire of a new wall thermostat , indoor PCB , and inter connecting ( possibly ) to the outdoor unit. Give Air Diffusion Agencies a ring if need a new controller , Bill Threadgold is the owner . They have @ four branches and are a distributor of air con units .They should be able to recommend a good contractor if your repair does not work.

thanks mate but i don't have a wall thermostat it seems to be all "internally" controlled

I have the remote which is used to set the temp but nothing else

I soldered the joints, had to put a piece in as the mice didn't leave enough length, I also heat shrunk the joints so in theory all should be fine

my wife has been using it every night since with no dramas so i can only assume all is fixed

after mentioning my system to others and saying how mice killed it I am
surprised at how many others have had the same thing happen

all systems chucked out.......makes me wonder just how many were actually repairable

but I guess the techies have "X" amount of time for each callout and could not stay too long

never mind my outcome appears to be fine.........I will chuck a heap of mothballs around the ceiling near the head unit.....that should deter Mickey and Minnie for a while
