Interesting spare parts prices

G'day all,

There have been a few threads in the past about Ford spare parts prices, but I think I have a new winner as of yesterday. I enquired about a driver's seatbelt for my KF Laser for a couple of reasons. One, it will definitely be needed for roadworthy and I'll be selling later in the year. Two, it's extremely dangerous and the reel is basically non-existent. Even when fed by hand it comes loose and stays loose under normal driving conditions.

Anyway, the cost quoted was about $330 Trade price (which I don't qualify for anyway)! The same part for an '87 Corolla over the counter cost me about $60 not long ago, and I'm pretty sure Falcon ones cost similar money.

It is apparently illegal to sell seatbelts secondhand and I'd be unlikely to ever find a good one anyway, so this is going to be a fun situation to get out of. It really says a thing or 2 about automotive spare parts prices when even a seatbelt will be priced way out of reach. Nice one fellas.

Well, now I know why that is.

One of the girls at work had her belt chewed to pieces by her beloved dog. Some place was charging her $90 fitted.

Ironic thing is, it's a 91 Laser.

I got the clicky thingy to hold the belt in and it cost $150 new genuine part for the TX5. But i didnt pay so didnt phase me in the least however i now need a new power window switch and got quoted $130 for that plus i need a new motor and regulator which was $1200.

Im gonna go second hand considering the car was $4000 when we bought it so not much point putting in a part thats worth a 1/4 of the value of the car.

It rediculous how they price parts. So i was looking at about $1500 including labour. Im gonna do the switch myself cause its easy and goin to get someone else to do the motor and regulator.

It all depends on the age of the car and availability of the part but its still unreasonable.

Spend $5 or less on phone calls and internet and shop around and you will get it cheaper elswhere. Look for a place which specialises in belts and fitment they should be able to help. Just because you have to buy new doesn't mean the dealer has the only ones to fit your car.

It's not illegal to sell s/h seat belts in ACT. Look up some wreckers in the Yellow Pages and give them a call. There are some specialist Ford wreckers in Canberra, Capital Fords Parts in Mitchell (02) 6242 8953 and Ford Spares in Fyshwick (02) 6280 6148.

If your not bothered about original, Repco sell after market seat belts.

I need engine mounts for my XH which can only be genuine which well set me back $600 plus fitting now this suxs becouse a set for the EL-EF is $160 (same running gear)

I called Ford recently for a price on a genuine starter motor for an EF 5.0 and stopped listening after I they said "One Thousand". I can't remember the exact price but over $1000 is a little high for my liking.

Are you sure?

Genuine part numbers & prices, there are two different numbers for some reason:
EL6038A @ List Price $177.00

Hmmmm, I payed $45 for a Falcon Rear seatbelt, with reel and everything...

It is dodgy, I wouldn't buy a wrecker one... the car is there mostly because it's been in an accident, and that stuffs up seatbelts.

Wreckers in Townsville will legally sell anyone a seatbelt for around $20. Whether it comes out of a wreck is immaterial as most cars at wreckers are not accident damaged...at least not when they are 10 years or more old as they can be bought dirt cheap. Once it is in your car how can anyone tell that it isn't the original one.

yeah Spare Parts can be like that. I work in the Industry at a Dealership in Spare Parts.

Some things you look up and expect to be heaps dearer and some things are just unbelivable.

there is a lot of variants to how prices are set and hardly any of it has anything to do with the dealership its the Manufacturer.

You guys have obviously never had anthing to do with Toyota spares prices!!

My wife owned a Holden Apollo Wagon when we got married and the Toyota spares prices were on avaerage 200% higher than Holden spares. Now considering the only differnce in the toyota version and the holden version was a couple of crappy badges and hubcaps, it's obvious that Toyota in english translates to rip off.

This has recently been confirmed when a mate needed to replace the alloy water pump housing on a V6 Forunner, Toyota genuine trade price was over $1,300. My mate questioned the amazing cost and asked was it a part that rarley falied and was advised that they sell heaps of them!

He ended up getting an aftermarket thing (with the same part nos on them!) for about $300.

With Ford, it pays to shop around, some dealers are famous for jacking prices up to make a quid.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've tried Repco and they do indeed sell belts, but not for Lasers. I didn't realise there were seatbelt specialists so that will be the next thing to try.

Also I will more than likely end up writing a friendly letter to Ford. It's one thing to overcharge for a Falcon GT steering wheel or similar, but profiteering over an economy car seatbelt is a disgrace.

It would be interesting to add up the cost of a whole falcon through spare parts, I would have a guess it would end up well over 100,000 unpainted and not put together. Now to write me a query for the parts database.

I believe Street Machine did it with a VN back in the day and it came out at $136,000 odd for a povo pack with no options.

Wheels magazine did the same thing for a Holden Camira at the time and it came out around $70,000. Imagine if you add labour for a mechanic to assemble it.

Have you checked Mackay Rubber for your mounts? Available at most auto parts shops.
